Discovering the meilogu
Discovering the meilogu
ala ‘e Idda (In Sardinian language “Behind the village”) is the mountain behind the pretty Red Village of Banari. Close to The hill stretches the Monte Pelao plateau, one of the two most important hills of the Meilogu. From here branching out a dense network of hiking trails that connects various towns of the Historical Region to each other: I Sentieri del Pelao (The Pelao trails). The Pala ‘e Idda path is very charming in any season and, thanks to the coolness emanating from the pines and oaks, it’s very pleasant to walk in even in summer. The scent of the undergrowth and resin will accompany you along the way and some signs will give you the opportunity to learn more about the plants and vegetation that make this place full of life. You can completely deep in the sounds and smells of nature and discover, on the top of the hill, a magical place where you can find, covered by moss and despite to the ticking clock, the ancient Pinnetta: the stone refuge where the old shepherds were spending their days and nights to tend the flock.

The waterfalls in S’Adde Manna – The Great Valley – are perhaps the most popular place from autumn to spring. In fact in the area there are several paths, different picnic areas and and a charming historical heritage to discover. The ideal way to visit the waterfalls reach the valley floor with a vehicle (bike, motorbike, car…) and then continue on foot. Starting from via Sassari (on the corner of the B&B S’Asilo) follow the road towards the valley and halfway take a layover to admire the ancient Pinnetta which can be seen from the olive grove. Once you reach the valley, among slender white poplars, wrinkled oaks, spring shades of blooms and vibrant autumn foliage, you will seem to immerse yourself in a enchanted wood … From here you just have to park your vehicle and continue following the signs for “Cascate” (waterfalls). The path is fully landmarked and in the most impervious section there is a rope that you can use to help you climb and finally reach the last of the three jumps of the waterfall. But there’s more! On top of the latter stands the ancient Nuraghe Santu Ortolu. If the rains have not been too abundant and you are with a local, it is also possible to reach it and observe the waterfall and the valley from above. On your return, pick up your vehicle, cross the small bridge and continue north-west for 2/3 km to the Country Romanic Church of Madonna di Cea. Spend a moment to admire it and the courtyard of the close tiny convent. After this layover takes the main road and in 10 minutes you’ll be again in Banari at the B&B.

This path it’s perfect to walk in the coldest periods, but it’s the best that you can choose to have a promenade under the first spring sun. In fact, thanks to its southern exposure, this trail is sunny all day and it’s wonderful to walk here when the sky is cludless blu, as usual of the most days in Sardinia from the end of February to November, when begin the rain season. This is a panoramic and circular trail with a 360-degree view on the valley where you can admire gergous flowering and olive groves, as well as make unexpected and nice meetings… for example with the goats grazing around there!
At the entrance of the path there is a small picnic area where you can enjoy a break with a panoramic view on the valley and with an open space, a bit windy on days and excellent for those who love fly kites.
